Firm Foundation VA: Building Stability for Families in Need

How one Virginia nonprofit is changing lives through housing support and community development.

Firm Foundation VA has been a cornerstone of community support in Richmond for over a decade. Through their housing stability programs and family services, they have helped hundreds of families find their footing during challenging times.

A Decade of Impact

What started as a small outreach effort has grown into one of Virginia's most respected family support organizations. Brickers Foundation sat down with their executive director, Tamara Greene, to learn more about their mission and the communities they serve.

"When a family walks through our doors, they are often at their most vulnerable," Greene explains. "Our job is not just to provide a roof — it is to help them build a foundation they can stand on for years to come."

Programs That Meet People Where They Are

Firm Foundation's flagship initiative, StableStart, pairs families with case managers who work alongside them for up to eighteen months. The program addresses not only housing but also employment readiness, financial literacy, and access to healthcare — recognizing that stability requires more than a single intervention.

The results speak for themselves. Over 85 percent of families who complete the StableStart program remain in stable housing two years after graduation. It is a model that other organizations across the Southeast are beginning to replicate.
